Broker Selection
The success of a project given to an outside broker depends on factors such as the quality of the interaction between the client and the broker and their individual skills. Skills to look for in an ideal broker and the characteristics which typify the ideal client are outlined below.
Ideal Broker Skills
- Has a good knowledge of the issue at hand;
- Has thorough experience in order to bring additional knowledge to the client's internal resources;
- Has experience in consulting and solid professional education;
- Will, if asked, provide a client list and those people of reference with whom the client can discuss these individual skills;
- Has management experience in companies;
- Has credibility;
- In addition to technical knowledge, has the ability to consider the human factor;
- Open minded;
- Can listen, read between the lines and think quickly;
- Does not get bogged down with details - can focus on the essentials;
- Has an analytical mind both in depth and in scope;
- Well balanced between theory and practice;
- Comfortable with special tasks;
- Communicates simply and efficiently;
- Is a good teacher;
- Has control over his/ her feelings;
- Has a personality that is compatible with the company executives and has a high ethical code.
Ideal Client Skills
- Can clearly define his/her goals as well as time and money restraints;
- Clearly communicates his/her expectations and requirements;
- Is not sparing of information and provides the material necessary to complete the project;
- Is available;
- Helps meet deadlines;
- Knows how to voice worries and criticism;
- Gives feedback;
- Respects the brokers expertise;
- Acts in order to help the consultant to do a good job.
